Reasons like this blog post are probably the reasons why I failed every business class I ever took. Its the Holiday season, my gold rush season? This is the time of year that I should be and need to be pushing sales, pushing needs, pushing wants. Pushing people to want more. Well, I guess I don't know much about business, because this Holiday season those are some of my last priorities.
I guess I have a hard time pushing hard sales during this time of the year because Ive gotten older, I have realized that money does not equal value. Honestly, most of the time, the opposite is true.
In 2006 my home church started partaking in this thing called the Advent Conspiracy. It was a campaign to consciously spend less on Christmas, and then with the money you saved - you gave it away to those less fortunate. It seems like a good idea, so I partook not really understanding the gravity of the situation at hand. I later learned that Americans spend over 450 BILLION DOLLARS on Christmas EVERY YEAR. Which isn't really a lot of money I thought, until I realized that all the experts (the people who get paid to come up with stats like this) say that we could effectively SOLVE world hunger AND provide clean drinking water to everyone in the world for around 30 Billion. Put it this way - 450 BILLION is more than double Apple and Googles income... COMBINED.
And Americans alone spend that every year on Christmas.
So this year, I decided to get more involved. We are partnering with Justice International and asking you guys to join us. Justice International is a leading non-profit aimed at ending modern day slavery and Sex-Slave Trafficking.
It seems like an absurd problem to deal with in the 21st Century. And yet, slavery is a reality for millions of people around the world. Here's some facts to consider:
Each year, nearly 2 million children are exploited in the global commercial sex trade. [UNICEF]
The total market value of illicit human trafficking is estimated to be in excess of $32 billion. [U.N.]
27 million men, women and children are held as slaves. [Kevin Bales, Disposable People]
1 in 5 women is a victim of rape or attempted rape in her lifetime. [U. N. Development Fund for Women]
Through the Advent Conspiracy we are proud to support International Justice Mission in its efforts to bring rescue to victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression. Every day, IJM lawyers, investigators and aftercare professionals answer the call to justice by working with local governments to:
- Rescue victims of violent abuse and ensure long-term aftercare - Securing long-term aftercare for survivors of abuse - Pursuing accountability for perpetrators under local laws - Partnering with local authorities to transform broken justice systems — so that poor people are protected for good
We are asking you to help. Instead of buying a random sweater, gift card, or whatever that last minute gift might be, make a donation in someones name instead. We will send you a card stating exactly where the money is going, and thanking you for your contribution. Because of peoples help, this is what we have seen the last four years alone!
- More than 2,000 children, women and men have been freed from slavery. - More than 800 women and children have been freed from forced prostitution. - More than 300 individuals have been arrested for trafficking-related offenses. - Hundreds of widows and orphans have had stolen property returned to them. - Thousands have received their entitled documentation of citizenship or elevated legal status.
Together we can make a difference.
